This time next week, we’ll all have opened the first couple of days on our advent calendars and the Christmas countdown will be well and truly underway. You’d be forgiven for thinking that it was winter already, with the temperatures plummeting from the reasonably mild start to the month that we had.

Last weekend, figures as low as minus six degrees Celsius were recorded in Topcliffe (in north Yorkshire), with Benson (in south Oxfordshire) experiencing temperatures as low as minus 5.6 degrees Celsius – showing that the cold weather was certainly not exclusive to one unlucky area. Incredibly, these temperatures were lower than those in Moscow, which had a slightly ‘warmer’ weekend – just minus one degrees Celsius!

With Christmas just a month away and the threat of snow apparently on the horizon, there have been a slurry of bets being placed on this being the first white Christmas in five years. What did come with the white Christmas in 2009 was El Niño – which was this countries coldest spell in over twenty eight years, with temperatures between December 2009 and January 2010 occasionally falling below a freezing fifteen degrees Celsius.

Make sure that you're fully prepared, as the current El Niño has triggered fears that this winter we may experience similar low temperatures, with Dr Todd Crawford (a weather service international meteorologist) commenting that there will be “below normal temperatures for the UK in December and January”.

Some good news however, is that if (or when!) the snow does arrive, we will hopefully be better prepared for it than ever, with 1.2 million tonnes of salt stockpiled, and fleets of gritters at the ready – according to the Local Government Association.

Luckily, we have a full range of clothing, footwear and accessories that will keep you warm this winter – so that you can tackle the next few months head on.
