As someone who loves challenges, it was no surprise that I was drawn to Todd Crag. For those who don't know, Todd Crag is a fell located in the English Lake District. It's not the tallest mountain by any means, but the views from the top are stunning.
Last weekend, I decided to finally tackle Todd Crag. I'd wanted to do this for ages but always struggled with it. It's a hike from Ambleside, about 2.7 miles, but I figured I could handle it.
Since I was walking solo, I figured I'd document the journey in case any of you are thinking about doing the same thing. Here's what my journey looked like and what you can learn from it.
Beginning of the walk
The walk starts in Ambleside, at the car park behind Zeffirellis Cinema. From here, follow Stockghyll Lane until you reach a bridge over Stock Ghyll Waterfall. The beginning of the hike is pretty easy. The path is well-marked, and there's a steady incline but nothing too strenuous. Cross the bridge and turn left, then follow the path as it winds its way upstream.
A sight to behold of Lake Windermere
After around 15 minutes of walking, you'll start to get views of Lake Windermere through the trees. Keep following the path as it starts to climb more steeply, and soon you'll reach a clearing with excellent views down to Lake Windermere.
Ascending to the summit of Todd Crag
Now it's time to start climbing in earnest! The path zig-zags its way up Todd Crag, gaining height steadily. Hang in there - it's worth it, I promise! The views from the top of Todd Crag are incredible.
After around 30-35 minutes of walking, you'll reach the top of Todd Crag, where there are great views in all directions, even on a cloudy day! Take some pictures, have a snack, and just take it all in.
The descent from Todd Crag
From the top of Todd Crag, follow the path as it descends steeply back down into Ambleside. This part of the walk is definitely not for those with a fear of heights! Keep following the path until you reach Stockghyll Lane again, then turn left and follow the lane back into Ambleside town centre.
Reaching Ambleside
The walk back to Ambleside is all downhill, so it should be a piece of cake after the hike up Todd Crag! Finally - you're back in Ambleside! This is a great little walk that can easily be done in the afternoon, with plenty of time left to explore Ambleside town afterward. It was my second walk after the Seaford to Eastbourne journey, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Tips to make your journey enjoyable
The route from Ambleside to Todd Crag takes you through picturesque scenery with some challenges along the way. Here are my top tips for making it fun.
Start early to avoid the crowds: Ambleside is a popular spot with tourists, so if you want to enjoy the walk without being jostled by other walkers, start out first thing in the morning. That way, you'll also beat the heat later on in the day.
Don't forget your water: Todd Crag is a climb of about 2.7 miles, so it's important to stay hydrated. Make sure to bring at least 1 litre of water per person.
Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at the top of Todd Crag: The views from up there are breath-taking, and you'll definitely work up an appetite after the climb!
Take your time and enjoy the scenery: This walk is all about taking in the beauty of nature, so make sure to stop often to appreciate your surroundings. If you can, try to do the walk on a clear day so you can see for miles around.
I hope this post inspired some of you to get out there and explore the Lake District! Walking up Todd Crag from Ambleside is a great little adventure, and the views from the top are 100% worth the effort.
