It is the worst feeling when you are hiking and your socks get wet. They are damp and your feet get cold. Believe it or not, it can be a dangerous thing when the weather is particularly cold. It is important to buy the right walking and waterproof socks along with your hiking boots.
Here is a quick guide to help you with walking and waterproof socks which ensures that your feet stays warm and dry during any outdoor activity:
There is more to socks that you think!
They provide us warmth and are just as important as another piece of clothing. If you are going out, you might as well know the purpose of it. Buy socks according to the activity you are going to perform or experience. For heavy adventure based outdoor activities there are different types of socks which might be more helpful. If you are hiking up in the mountains, you might want to invest in a thicker pair of socks as they provide more insulation than a normal pair of socks. However, if you are trail running, you can go for a well-fitted sock. These are made with a narrower fit for sensitivity and require a have cushioning in key areas.
It only makes sense that you would never invest on running socks if you are going for hiking as these socks would not have any sort of cushioning to keep you warm and comfortable.
Likewise, it is only fair to not use hiking socks while running as they would make you uncomfortable and sweaty. It would lead to blisters.
Different types of socks
There are different types of socks for different kinds of activities. Some of them are:
Mid-weight walking socks
Most of the hiking and walking shoes fall under this category. Whether you are hiking up above or are walking, this walking pair of socks is ideal for colder climates and have a greater level of cushioning for all-day comfort. You can also consider a different blend of materials to manage the temperature in your feet which can help prevent blisters.
Heavy-weight walking socks
One of the heaviest socks to invest in, these stocks are perfect for tough terrains and colder temperatures. These keep you warm and fuzzy keeping your activity going. They can be combined with a sock liner for extra insulation and comfort for extremely cold conditions.
Lightweight socks
Last but not the least; lightweight socks are perfect for warmer climatic conditions. If you need breathable and moisture-wicking socks, you can very well invest in these. They are also perfect for small and simple trail walking, running and keep your feet cool. These socks have padding in areas where you actually require them.
Basic features
There are some of the basic features for which walking socks are known for. Some of them are:
Holding system
Socks usually have a design which uses heel support padding to keep you heel in place while moving. It also reduces friction and wears between the fabric layers, as well as lessens the chances of having blisters.
Wicking and Cooling
Some of the best hiking socks are highly wicking in nature. It also means that they remove excess moisture from the feet to keep it breathable. There are socks which are made from natural and technical fibbers which allow more room for the air to circulate.
Prevention of odour
You must ensure that the feet are comfortable. But you should also make sure that your feet are not damp, and are odour free. Odour prevention socks keep your feet comfortable and eliminate bacteria. It also keeps you feeling fresh after a long arduous journey.
Remember to choose your socks wisely. If they are too tight, they could prevent air circulation. If the socks are too low on the ankle, there would be a lack of protection from the exterior environment. Choose socks according to the activity and have a fun time with your adventures!
