Walkers – and monster hunters – are promised a treat in Scotland with the opening of a new walking trail on the south side of the iconic Loch Ness, in the Highlands.

The 28-mile waymarked trail heads along the much-less-travelled southern end of the loch on the less-travelled south side of the loch, heading from Loch Tarff, near Fort Augustus, to Torbreck, on the outskirts of Inverness.

The new continuous and managed trail is primarily for walkers, as well as off-road cyclists and horse riders. Of course, whatever your means of travel on the new South Loch Ness Trail there are prime opportunities for trying to spot the infamous Nessie Monster.

The trail, which can be walked west to east or vice versa connects existing and upgraded tracks with new sections along the way.

As well as  waymarkers to show walkers the way there are also a number of  interpretation panels revealing information about the environment, such as the names of an amazing array of flora and fauna.

A wealth of amazing scenery along the walking route

The scenery en route is fabulously diverse. From majestic mountains to awesome moorlands, and from dense pine forests to stunning open loch views, this is a walking route that score highly on the awe-inspiring scale.

Highlights of the South Loch Ness Trail include the stunning waterfalls at Foyers, which were made famous by Scottish poet Robert Burns; the site of an Iron Age fort at Inverfarigaig; the grand single span General Wade bridge that dates from 18th century and spectacular panoramas of the Great Glen.

At some points the South Loch Ness Trail runs alongside the waters of Loch Ness loch, while on other sections it climbs to more than  1200ft. The changes in gradient mean that walking boots are recommended, to support ankles and for improved grip. Remember that the weather in Scotland can be fickle, so go for waterproof footwear, and pop a waterproof jacket in your backpack.
