During those wet, cold days, finding motivation to go for a run can be tough. Use these top tips to help you get outside and start running – once you start to see progress, you’ll wonder why it took you so long to start!

Before anything, you have to start. As Nike would say, just do it. Grab your running shoes and get outside. It doesn’t matter how fast you are or how far you can run, you just need to make a start. Also, don’t be overly critical of yourself – everyone starts somewhere and the more you do it, the better you’ll be.

Find out what suits you best, everything from when you run to where you run. Where in particular, is a cause of debate that just comes down to personal preference. Running on a treadmill keeps you inside, away from the rain or the snow, and gives you the complete statistics of your distance covered, average speed and more. Running outside, however, offers more freedom but also more variation to your run – something which will hopefully keep you motivated. The varying terrains also make it more challenging and the cool air helps to keep your body temperature down.

Get into the routine of planning and making time to go for your runs at specific times. If you don’t have set times you might lose track of what you’ve done and when, and “a few” lazy days might actually be more than you think! As unappealing as it might sound at first, running in the morning is a great option. You might not like the idea of having to wake earlier, but the roads will be much quieter and you will be left feeling energised for the rest of the day – plus, it’s lighter in the morning at the moment!

If you’re struggling to keep motivated, try and find yourself a running partner! This will hopefully give you that extra push to go for a run when you don’t feel like it as not only will you be letting yourself down, but your partner too. Having another person not only to run with, but to discuss specific techniques and plans with can really help you to improve. If you’re struggling to find a partner, there will likely be a local running club that you can join – and don’t worry – their members will be of varying abilities.

Another way to really help your motivation is being able to see your progress and by setting targets for you to aspire to. After every run, make a note of your distance and time and then you’ll be able to look back over them and see how much progress you’ve made. From there, you can look at your progress over a certain period of time and set yourself targets to work towards.
