If you love being outdoors, a train trip can provide some wonderful experiences. You may want to begin with epic train journeys such as the Tran-Siberian Railway, the Rocky Mountaineer, or the Orient Express. I would love to enjoy one of these train trips, but UK has some fabulous train journeys.
Here are the top 5 train trips in the UK that you should include in your bucket list.
- Fort William to Mallaig
If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, the Jacobite steam train should be on your bucket list. It has been one of the most popular rail journeys in the UK, but the Harry Potter movie brought it to the attention of the teenagers. The train passes by 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct and offers picturesque views across the mountains, rivers, and towns. It follows the same route as shown in the Harry Potter.
The journey starts near the highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis and crosses lochs and rivers (Loch Morar, River Morar, and Loch Nevis), and small towns.
- Settle to Carlisle
It is a 73-mile long railway goes through some of the most fantastic landscapes in Northern England as it passes by the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines. It commences near Leeds to proceed to the England/Scotland outskirt, stopping at 10 stations en route.
A standout amongst the most renowned scenes along the route is Ribblehead Viaduct, a spectacular Grade II logged structure with 24 adventurous curves. The trip is particularly amazing in the colder months when the snow falls across the countryside.
- Snowdon Mountain Railway
Snowdon Mountain Railway is one of the favourite railways of the UK residents. This extraordinary train trip has been taken by more than 12 million travellers since 1986. The train starts at Llanberis and passes two viaducts, cascades, valleys, stunning countryside and then the breath-taking view as you climb up the highest mountain.
It will stop between the route, but you’ll ultimately reach the summit. If the weather is clear on the travel day, the views are going to leave you stunned. In case, the weather is not good, you can visit the visitor centre and café.
- The Bellmond British Pullman Railway
If you want to enjoy a small trip on the Orient Express without incurring a hefty amount, which is generally appended to this Luxury railway, you must check out the Bellmond British Pullman, a sister railway of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. You’ll get the same experience that combines glamour, luxury, and comfort along with fine food. You can choose wines to complement the delightful cuisine.
The Bellmond British Pullman leaves from London Victoria and reaches interesting places in Southern Britain like castles, cities, sporting events, country houses, etc. You can take weekend trips to Cornwall too.
- The Welsh Highland Railway
The Welsh Highland Railway is considered as one of the best ways to explore Wales. It is the oldest railway organisation in the world and it truly feels like you're venturing back in time as you step into the carriages. It covers 25 miles from Caernarfon, leaving from under the castle walls for the trip to Porthmadog.
You must enjoy beer made by locals when you pass through the picturesque landscape of Snowdonia. The train then crosses the foot of Snowdon, the beautiful village of Beddgelert, through the striking Aberglaslyn Pass and finally reaches Porthmadog.
These are the 5 train trips in UK that will bring back the joy and excitement of traditional train journeys.
