Adventure trips are always fascinating. When the days become longer and evenings start being warmer, it’s time to head outdoors for a little excursion of your own. However, there are plenty of options for how you can spend your weekend; camping is the one with a lot of surprises. Where camping can exhilarate you in many ways, the down risks are not to miss. Heading out in the wilderness also carries weather-related risks, and the one that follows camping is a thunderstorm. Packing light when you head for camping is an exciting perk of the outdoor lifestyle, but it can leave you exposed if a storm rolls in. To help you stay out of the way of thunderstorms, there are some tips given below that you can follow if you are caught out.
Get inside as quickly as possible
Being on a camping site is not safe when the lightning strikes in. So, the first step you take when you sense that the weather is getting at its worse is to seek shelter. The best option for staying safe during a thunderstorm is a vehicle. Be it a car, truck, or a bus, any enclosed vehicle will do. According to research, it has been cleared that the energy travels around outside the metal vehicle. Hence, it is safe to get inside instead of lurking behind the rocks or inside the tent. Also, make sure that you do not use any electronic equipment, or lean against the doors.
Avoid high ground
When on camping, you should avoid high ground at all cost. Standing on top of the mountain, or climbing up a tree is only a way for inviting troubles. Weather is unpredictable but you are not. When the thunderstorm starts rolling in, you should find the lower ground or crouch down until the storm passes. Avoid being near the places that are at height. If you can't find any shelter, the best way is to lay down flat. If you are a part of the group, advise them to spread out and lie down as the group of people standing in a thunderstorm are the perfect spot to hit.
Avoid water bodies
If you think water is going to save you from lightning, you are wrong, my friend. While some of you may think that water will attract lightning, meaning you are safe, that's not exactly how it is. Water is an excellent conductor of electricity, meaning that it can travel so far to catch you. If you are camping on the beach or near a riverside, it's best that you move and get a shelter before you become the target. Being outside during a storm, especially near water, will only make you regret.
Keep a weather check
The best way to stay safe in a thunderstorm is not to get caught in one! Before planning your outdoor adventures, you must check the weather first. If everything seems alright and still you get surprises on your way, it is time to seek safety. Because of the human instinct, you can always sense the changes or if something is up. In cases where you are planning camping or hiking, hear the thunder, sense the wind, or smell rain in the air to be super aware of lightning and thunderstorms. If you can feel all the changes, it is quite the indicator that you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
Final Thoughts
Natural weather calamities like the thunderstorm are dangerous even if you are indoors, but caught up in one while camping seems terrifying. No matter where you are heading to or if the temperature seems okay; it is essential to pack the safety gear. Although being outside in the lightning can never guarantee safety but if you follow these simple steps mentioned above, you can be prepared for whatever is coming your way.
