Hiking is a rewarding experience understood only by the ones who have done it anytime in their life. Despite the challenges that it puts the hikers through, it is not something that you would not want to try. The ones who love adventure can’t simply go without this escapade and adding it to their ‘to do’ list. But, as mentioned, it is surely a delightful experience, but lays many challenges too. So, better be equipped with everything that you need to tackle them. Here are some tips for those who plan to go on a hiking adventure and have no idea where to start from.
Dress in Layers
Clothing is essential to keep yourself protected and safe in the harsh cold weather. As the temperature varies from place to place, the clothing also changes. The bottom of the trail is usually less cold as compared to the summit of the mountain. Proper insulation helps to regulate the body temperature and keep you comfortable. You should be properly covered from head to toe to bear the adversities of weather. It’s always better to have two pairs; one for normal cold and other with waterproofing for snowfall or rain.
Plan Smartly
Don’t be overambitious while planning for your winter hiking. It is necessary to keep in mind the distance and difficulties that you are going to face on the trail. It’s always better that you choose a trail that you already know or have an idea about, as you surely won’t want to get stuck in deep snow. The sun sets quite early in winter so plan a day in such a manner that you come back before sunset. This will lessens your chances of getting lost in an unknown place.
Pack All You Need
There is a set of basic items that every hiker must carry with themselves. This includes the gear as well as some other essential items that you will be needing during an emergency. Any basic hiking gear consists of a trail map, compass, first-aid kit, pocket knife, torch or headlamp, etc. Other things that you can carry for an overnight stay could be your sleeping bag or some snacks, or food.
Gather Information
Winter hiking can be really challenging, especially when you have to tackle or fight adverse conditions. This makes it necessary to understand the avalanche dynamics. If you are travelling in and around snow, then you must be aware of the skills to tackle it. Having a knowledge of crampons also comes in handy while you are turning and moving around. But, use it only when you know how to otherwise you will injure yourself.
Invest Wisely
Any Avid hiker would know the importance of a superior quality gear. Hence, purchasing the best quality gear is surely a wise investment to make. For winter hiking, you will require boots or crampons, waterproof pants, insulated jacket, thick warm socks, hiking poles, gloves, camp gloves, goggles or sunglasses. A good quality backpack is also important to carry all this stuff safely. Going for decent quality products will also ensure that you will not need to buy them again for the next hiking adventure.
Last but not least, make sure you keep yourself hydrated and full, keeping a stock of energy giving food. After your hiking trip, you might like to go out to treat yourself with the local delicacies. Nothing is better than tasty food after such a long and tiring adventure in the mountains.
