Have you ever wanted to get away from it all and camp in the wild? There's something incredibly freeing and exhilarating about sleeping under the stars, surrounded by nothing but nature. As a wild camper, I know that the packing light is the key to having an amazing experience. You don't want anything weighing you down or getting in your way while wild camping.
This guide is a must-read for anyone who plans on going out into nature without modern amenities. It provides essential information about what you need when camping and why certain items are essential! Here's a comprehensive checklist of everything you need for wild camping.
Checklist of wild camping supplies
- An outdoor shelter or tent
The first thing on your list should be some shelter. Unless you're an experienced survivalist who is comfortable sleeping out in the open, you will want to invest in a 3 season tent or another kind of shelter.
Make sure it's big enough for you and any other people joining you on your trip and any gear you'll need to bring inside with you. If you plan to camp in an area known for its bad weather, ensure your shelter is sturdy and waterproof.
Sleeping bag or pad
You'll need something warm and comfortable to sleep on, so don't forget your sleeping bag or pad.
Inflatable pads may be more comfortable, but they don’t do as well over time. You can pick up punctures easily, and their air-holding ability fades quickly with use; for this reason, it's best to inspect your tent closely and carry a repair kit before setting out on any adventures where you know there will be lots of walking around inside (or outside) after dark hours have passed!
Foam mats provide relief in some ways; they typically aren't damaged by weather elements because water damage is less likely than its counterpart and offer negatives like bulkiness.
Clothing
When it comes to clothes, layering is key. You want to be able to adjust your clothing depending on the temperature, so pack items that can be easily added or removed as needed.
A good base layer should be made of moisture-wicking fabric to keep you comfortable and dry, even if you start to sweat. In addition to a base layer, pack a few insulating layers like a fleece or wool sweater, and a waterproof outer layer in case of rain.
As for footwear, make sure you have sturdy hiking boots that are broken in and comfortable. And don't forget socks! Bring several thick wool socks to keep your feet warm at night.
Hygiene
Just because you're roughing doesn't mean you have to sacrifice hygiene. Pack travel-sized versions of all your favourite toiletries, including soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and deodorant.
I use my flannel to freshen up after a day on the trail. Sometimes, I'll even bring two pieces so one can be washed for everyday use and another taken out only when it needs washing! You can apply some ecological laundry liquid.
Cooking supplies
Of course, you're going to need food and water while wild camping! Pack enough non-perishable food for each person in your group for the entire trip and at least one gallon of water per person per day.
If possible, bring along a Jetboil water boiler so you can even drink from streams or lakes without getting sick. And don't forget about snacks! Pack plenty of high-energy snacks like granola bars or trail mix to keep your energy up while hiking or exploring during the day.
Safety and Health
You never know when someone might get hurt, so it's always better to be safe than sorry. Pack a small first aid kit with bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, painkillers, etc. This will come in handy if anyone gets hurt while hiking or in an emergency in the middle of the night. Make sure everyone in your group knows where the first aid kit is so they can find it quickly if needed.
Now that you know what wild camping essentials to pack, it's time to start planning your trip! When you prepare well, wild camping can be an incredibly rewarding experience that will give you memories (and stories) that will last a lifetime. So what are you waiting for? Grab your gear and head out into the wilderness!
