With the Christmas period upon us, many of us will be enjoying some well-deserved time off work – so why not make the most of your break and take a trip to a ski resort?

As we’re in Britain (which doesn’t have much snow at all in a lot of places) the closest option is of course, France, which is the home to many popular ski resorts.

One such option is La Plagne, which is located in the alpine valley of the Tarentaise. Currently experiencing temperatures of around six degrees Celsius, there is a huge difference between the depth of the snow on the upper and lower slopes. Measured in centimetres, the snow depth on the low slopes is just five, whereas the upper is measured at eighty.

The coldest resort has also produced the most consistent amount of snow, with temperatures as low as just two degrees Celsius – resulting in the low slopes containing snow as deep as thirty-two centimetres and the upper ones at sixty-five. This resort is Val d’Isère which is located in south-eastern France, which is just five kilometres from the Italian border.

Snowfall has been infrequent around the Alpine area since the end of November with only light snow showers, which when coupled with reasonably mild temperatures has made cover thin – which isn’t ideal for skiers! In other parts of Europe, man-made snow has been created and used to try and tempt people to the slopes.

The Dolomiti Superski resorts in Italy have opened more than four hundred and twenty miles of pistes despite a dry start to the winter, with resorts in Arlberg, Austria and Grenoble, France also looking extremely wintry (even above two thousand metres) – despite the lack of snowfall – thanks to the creation and usage of man-made snow.

Alternatively, if you have the option to take a ski break outside of Europe, you’re more likely to find a good amount of real snow. Resorts in the American Rookies (which includes destinations in both America and Canada) as well as in the Pacific Northwest of California are experiencing low temperatures and importantly, regular snowfall – with more expected.
