The Perfect Skiing Attire
Author
Mike has a real passion for cycling, hiking and just generally being outdoors. Being from Warrington, he is only a few hours away from North Wales, The Peak District, Yorkshire and the Lake District. He has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and done a lot of the mountains in the Lake District. His new passion is walking his dog and enjoying a pint at the end.
To see the alpine mountains and pine trees laden with layers of white snow, a trip is essential but what to wear is an even more crucial part. When you decide to take a trip to the hills, between worrying about the weather and the gear to carry, the major concern we face is the question of what to wear. Finding the right skiing attire is just a little help away. Look at the following points that might help you in making the right choice.
Get the Layers Right
While dressing for stepping out in the snow, it is important that your layers are right. Avoid fabrics such as cotton, canvas or Denim which might take time to dry and will not provide you enough warmth.
The first step is to get the Base layers right. Wear breathable fabric that has moisture-wicking properties such as polyester, silk or better yet, merino wool.
The Second Step is to add-on mid layers. This layer too should consist of breathable and quick- drying fabric so as to stay warm. But make sure the mid layer isn’t too bulky, a fleece or wool pullover shall do the trick.
The Third step is to make sure you have a weatherproof top layer. Mostly waterproof ski-jackets and ski pants are enough but if it is a particularly windy day then an insulated layer is advisable.
The Fourth Step is something without which your attire is incomplete, that is, a warm pair of wool- blend or mid-weight merino wool socks to keep your feet warm. All ski socks have an added cushioning on the shin that covers the part of the leg which will be resting on the ski boot. Make sure to pull the socks all the way up before you don your boots.
Add the Right Gear to Your Attire
When you are going for a great skiing experience, pair it with the right gear to have fun skiing.
Skin Care Before the Gear
Before wearing your skiing gear, make sure that your skin is protected with sunscreen and some Chapstick on your lips. This is best to avoid any damage from the bright sun rays in the cold, dry mountains.
Enhance Your Optical Clarity
Wearing ski goggles over your helmet provides you with a better visual of what is ahead as they are made to optimise vision in snow. However, polarised sunglasses can also be used as substitutes.
Put on your Helmet
When preparation of the face and neck is over, then comes the turn of a ski helmet. It is crucial for the safety of your head and avoids hard impact.
Cover the Hands Next
Wear mittens or warm, waterproof gloves made with rubberised or leather grip for a good skiing experience.
Cover the Neck
In order to protect your chin and neck from the harsh and frigid winds of the mountains, it is important that you wear either a neck gaiter or a balaclava.
It’s Time for Wearing the Boots
Getting the right boots is much of a hard work than it sounds. However, the key is to get the boot as loose as possible before slipping in your foot by opening all the buckles and undoing the straps.
Finally, step into those Skis and enjoy the chilly mountain breeze and live in the moment. Enjoy with your family while ensuring proper safety.
