The Festival of Winter Walks!
Beginning on Saturday 19th December, and lasting for little over two weeks, the Ramblers’ ‘Festival of Winter Walks’ is underway, with hundreds of walks being organised all over England, Scotland and Wales. Whether you’re a seasoned walker or you just want to walk off those extra mince pies – there is a walk for you!
One of the best things about using the Ramblers website to find a winter walk is the choice of criteria that you can choose, to ensure that you can find a walk that is suitable for you, both time-wise and in terms of the difficulty.
Filter your search by days of the week, the difficulty, stability and distance, or maybe you wish to find a walk which is dog friendly, wheelchair friendly, or is by a river, lake or farmland.
You can even filter down to the bare bones, asking for a walk which contains baby changing facilities, a disabled toilet or refreshments.
With Saturday (19th December) being the first day of the festival, you might think that there would be a slow start with more and more events being planned, but no! There are over one hundred walks for you to take part in, across all parts of the participating countries.
If you fancy stretching your legs the following Saturday after a hopefully relaxing and lazy Christmas day (there are eleven walks on the big day if you don’t like the sound of that!) then Boxing Day has you covered.
The ‘Merthyr Valley’ group from South East Wales are planning a dog-friendly five mile walk beginning from the Red Cow Inn and following the Pontsticill Resevoir. If you’re looking for a walk that’s a little more challenging, there is a ten mile walk hosted by the ‘Milton Keynes & District’ group, which takes you through the Brickhill Woods and the Grand Union Canal – but sadly, no dogs allowed.
The festival doesn’t finish until Sunday 3rd December, so there are plenty of days for you to choose from if you aren’t free on Boxing Day!
