Cozy winters with frosty snow-covered mountains are ideal wonderlands. I know winter isn't everybody's cup of coffee and a lot of people would rather stay wrapped in blankets with hot cocoa and cookies. But hear me out when I say that a walk is an eye-opening experience in the winters. And, the best way to do so is by layering enough to keep your body warm and your mind focused on the walk.
What is the Triple Layer System?
The triple layer system is the best method to stay warm in the cold. It's obvious from the name that you need to add three layers so that your body can stay warm for as long as it wants. Besides, when the temperature goes up, you can always remove a layer and add one or vice versa.
Layer No. 1
The one thing that does not work for the base is a cotton T-shirt. Never wear cotton at the base since it absorbs the most amount of moisture and takes ages to dry. That's something you should leave for summer. What you need is a layer that can keep moisture away from your body so it doesn't even come near being cold. For this, you can try something made of a synthetic blend like polyester or even better, Merino wool. Also, remember to get something with long sleeves to help you stay warm since your arms will need ample protection too.
Layer No. 2
The sheer purpose of this layer is to provide insulation to keep your body warm. Opt for materials like fleece. Here are some reasons why fleece makes such a versatile and useful layer in winters:
- It is lightweight.
- It makes a snug fit.
- It is one of the most breathable materials
- It does not let moisture get into the body.
How about a down jacket? While it's true that it can protect you from the cold through its insulating properties in dry weather, the same cannot be said once it gets wet. A wet fleece jacket may not sound like the most exciting idea but it is still better than wearing a wet down jacket.
Layer No. 3
There are two things your outer layer must protect you from: the wind and the water. Walking in the cold means facing the wind and the moisture in the fog. Invest in a breathable waterproof jacket. While walking there is sweating and the precipitation absorbed can be both uncomfortable and disgusting. There are specific jackets created for interesting hikes through the hills or for plain walks. Choose a vented jacket if you need something breathable. Go for waterproof jackets instead of water-resistance ones. The first one is a temporary solution against moisture while the other provides protection from water absorption for a long time.
Summing Up
An important tip to remember while trying this triple layer system on you is that you should always leave some additional space underneath the layers. In areas that witness extreme cold weather, you may have to add more layers. This is why you will need a jacket big enough to cover those layers. You can always check out the internet to find either 3-in-1 jackets or a jacket that would efficiently cover all the layers.
