In the last few years, skiing has emerged as one of the popular sports. The mere idea of exploring the snowy mountains and terrains make it a enthralling experience for anyone. It will let you indulge in the scenic beauty of the mountains and give you the opportunity to explore those areas that have been untouched. The most rewarding experience is witnessing the snow-capped mountains glistening in the very sunlight.
Get a dose of fresh air, burn a few calories and enjoy the unscathed mountains, all combined together in the skiing experience. Once you have got the hang of it, you will simply become addicted. Ski touring opens up a whole new side of the world where you can enjoy the rough mountains, forests, wilderness and sense a great level of freedom and joy.
Don’t wait for the right moment
No moment would be right until you start skiing on your own. It might be challenging for you first as not everyone is an expert in it, but you can still enjoy the snow and let yourself learn from the experience itself. These days, many resorts have developed uphill trails connecting to their piste networks. These networks are also linked with dedicated touring routes safe from avalanches. The amateurs can start with easy off-piste descents as there is a possibility that you might get stuck in the steep slopes and trees. So, think wisely and be safe.
Fitness is not an issue
Ski touring is not very physically straining as it is just like hiking. You only need to be fit and get a clearance from your doctor in case you have a medical condition, which you cannot neglect. Balance is the key to mastering it. If you have the balance and know how to take a kick turn while changing direction, then you have it. Start with an hour or two of climbing first, which you can increase with time as per your fitness and endurance. In fact, for most people, three hours is enough for uphill climbing.
Be prepared with the right gear
Your gear items are what that would keep you going so it’s necessary to understand their importance. Get the right boots, bindings, skis and ensure that they are lightweight and not adding any additional burden on you. You can always rent the gear as they are easily available in your resort. Remember to keep your gear lightweight. Also, carry all the essentials in your kit that you would be needing there.
The avalanche gear kit will only be required if you go off-piste. However, it is advisable that you go with a guide or instructor if you are thinking of venturing off-piste. Appropriate clothing would include a good-quality base layer, a thin outer layer with ventilation and full length zip trousers. It is necessary to keep yourself warm with a lightweight jacket. Keeping it lightweight will make travel easier.
Lastly, to make your touring more enjoyable and less stressful, you can always join a course, where a professional or guide would help you in getting through the basics such as how to attach the sticky skins or look after them, or to use the bindings. They will tell you about the correct walking technique that will help you learn to balance. You can also learn about route finding, route planning, basic rescue skills, and avalanche awareness to propel yourself in your journey.
