Stuck for ideas of what to do this Valentine’s Day? Dreading a night in a packed out restaurant with bad service and couples canoodling in every corner? Well what could be more romantic than a stroll through some of Britain’s most beautiful landscapes to soothe the soul and bring you closer together…? (Literally, huddle up its freezing!) Here are our top suggestions and tips:

1. Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) Walk

SNH is inviting people to a fascinating free Valentine’s Day walk to hear the stories hidden within Fife’s coastal rocks. SNH geologist, Rachel Wignall says: “We don’t expect any heart-shaped rocks, but this walk will give you plenty to talk about on Valentine’s Day! Being a geologist is a bit like being a detective – but we get to discover clues from millions of years ago.” The walk begins at 10.30 am on Thursday, 14 February, and will take about two hours. Meet at the St Monans Parish Church car park, Braehead, St Monans.

2. Cheshire - Lyme Park.

For mountain biking romantics - take out your cycling map and head for magnificent Lyme Park, setting for the famous image of Darcy in his wet shirt coming face to face with Elizabeth Bennett in the TV version of Pride and Prejudice. Acres of sweeping moorland are grazed by ancient herds of red deer around the elegant country house.

3. Polzeath to Porteath

A famous wartime poem and a breath-taking sandy cove surrounded by gorse and woodland, with a rocky archway to a collapsed sea cave, this is a truly romantic setting. There are spectacular views out over Padstow Bay and beyond, as well as a puffin island and volcanic pillow lavas. Look out for the plaque, just around Pentire Point, commemorating the occasion when poet Laurence Binyon sat on these cliffs and was moved to compose “For the Fallen”, which was published by the Times newspaper in September 1914.

Just remember to wrap up warm in a men’s waterproof jacket or ladies waterproof jacket and thick socks and hold on tight for that extra bit of warmth! So, pack a picnic, turn your mobiles off and enjoy a special Valentine’s Day this year.
