Heading out in the cold is never the easiest thing to do, but when you’re fully prepared and appropriately dressed, it makes it so much easier.

Layer up effectively

Often the worst part of outdoor running is the chilly feeling when you first step foot outside. Don’t give in to the temptation to layer up too heavily to avoid that, as it’ll only hinder your performance once you begin. You’ll soon warm up after you start, so with the added layers you’ll quickly become too warm.

Wearing multiple, thin layers is far more effective – and will help to trap the heat without overheating. You may have to experiment to begin with, but generally, a baselayer, jumper and a warm, windproof fleece jacket should be effective.

Wear suitable footwear

When you’re running, you’ll of course be putting a lot of consistent pressure on your feet, so ensuring that your shoes fit correctly and possess the features you need is key. A new season brings varying conditions and many new challenges to overcome. The ground is more likely to be damp and/or icy, so wearing a waterproof pair of shoes is an ideal starting point.

Don’t forget to bring your warm accessories

As well as keeping the core of your body warm, make sure you also look after the rest of your body too! We lose a lot of heat through our heads, so ensuring that we minimise this by wearing a hat can help a lot. A thick, lightweight beanie would be the best option, but headbands can be useful too. Keep your fingers warm too with a pair of gloves or mitts, depending on your preference. Gloves can give you better grip, but mitts can often keep your fingers warmer as they are bunched together.
