Prepare for chilly adventures with your kids!
As we switch from summer into the year’s colder months, we need to ensure that our kids – as well as ourselves – are dressed appropriately. With unpredictable weather often occurring, it can seem difficult to prepare, but hopefully these top tips will help:
- Keeping warm is a priority during winter, making clothes that insulate essential. A baselayer can help enormously, so ensuring that you select the best kind for your child is key. Synthetic, wicking materials are some of the best, as is merino wool. Keeping skin dry helps to ensure a regulated temperature which is why the ability to wick is so important. The same materials apply for socks too!
- A baselayer is a very effective piece of the layering system, but it needs to be combined with an effective midlayer such as a jumper, sweatshirt or fleece jacket, for additional warmth.
- After we’ve got our baselayer and midlayer, we need to add our outer layer. Covering your child with a coat will help to keep them protected from whatever the elements throw your way. Key features such as being waterproof, windproof and breathable are definitely things to look out for and obtain.
- As well as the core of the body, don’t forget to cover your little ones head and hands! We lose a lot of heat through our head, so making sure that it’s well covered is essential to staying warm – hats with ear warmers are perfect. Give your child a pair of gloves or mittens too, to keep them snug and warm.
- If you carry or push your child, there are a couple of extra ways to keep them warm. Carrying them keeps them very close to yourself, so that they can feel your body heat. Arms and legs can still get chilly though, so keep them covered as usual. If they’re in a push chair, using a blanket to keep them warm – or a weather shield or spare jacket to keep them dry – can work well.
Before you and your kids head outside, ensuring that you are all fully covered and prepared can help your day to run as smooth as possible.
