Do you know? Some 20-25 minutes of exercise every day, particularly running can not only help you get in shape but also prevent several health ailments such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, obesity, heart disease, some cancers, and more. So, whenever the idea of skipping a run hits your mind, you must think of the benefits of running listed below.
#1 Improve your cardiovascular health
Running helps you build a healthy and strong heart. According to a study regular runners had a 45% lower risk of mortality due to heart ailments, compared to non-runners. Not just this, the same study also found that running 5-10 minutes a day, at a slower speed is enough to ward off your risk of death due to cardiovascular problems.
#2 Strengthen your joints
According to a researcher at Boston University, running improves your knee health. Contrary to popular belief, regular runners have almost half chances of suffering from knee osteoarthritis. On the other hand, low impact exercises such as swimming, elliptical workouts or walking don't provide the same benefits as running does.
#3 Reduce the risk of cancer
Running may not cure cancer but it can certainly reduce the risk of developing it. If you take part in running regularly you can reduce the risk by up to 24 percent. Running improves your digestion rate and improves the oxygen flow in your body, helping reduce the chances of developing stomach and tract cancers and lowers the chance of cancer attack in other parts of the body.
#4 Increase your lifespan
Even if you do running for 30 minutes a day and 5 times a week, you can add some more years to your life. Various studies have shown that when people started running, they lived longer than usual. Cancer patients added 5.3 years to their lives. People with heart problems gained around 4.3 years. A non-smoker adds 4.1 years, while a smoker adds 3 years to his life.
#5 Relieve stress and improve your mental wellbeing
Today, mental stress has become a common problem among millennials. You can simply reduce the level of your mental stress by running 20-30 minutes a day. Researches have shown that running works wonders for your mental health and helps you combat stress and anxiety with ease. Besides this, it is also helpful in uplifting your mood and improving your sleep quality.
#6 Improve your learning abilities
Are you one of those who forget things easily? If yes, lace up your shoes and hit the park, because running can improve your ability to learn and retain the information. Besides this, it also improves your thinking ability by around 50 percent.
Final Words
There are countless benefits of running, both physically and mentally right from strengthening your joints and muscles, improving your cardiovascular health to improving your stamina. The best part is that running is convenient and anyone can get started without spending a fortune. All you need is a good pair of shoes and track pants. That's all. Happy running!
