Fear of heights is common, especially for those who hike and try to reach the top trails. Imagine a beautiful view with the perfect weather. But you can’t reach it. Why? Because you are slowly realised that there’s too much altitude and you cannot move further.
In this situation, your heart sinks and you don’t want to turn back. But the fear is so overpowering that you end up going back to the starting point. Many climbers and hikers start doubting themselves and the increasing altitude doesn’t help. So, before you begin the hike, it is important to learn some physical and mental techniques that will prepare you for the hike.
Here are the four ways in which you can reach the top, literally and figuratively –
Stay Prepared for Everything
Climbing is stressful, especially for inexperienced hikers and backpackers. So, make sure that you don’t add to that stress by forgetting the gear. You also need to make sure that you get enough sleep, a full-fledged meal, and a proper fitness routine. This will give you a boost in your confidence and help you climb the hills.
Along with the physical strength, also remember to make the essential gear. Pack extra layers (you cannot be certain about the weather), comfortable shoes (you need to get a grip), and sufficient food and water supply.
Various Meditation Techniques
The best way to climb through a hill is to maintain a steady pace. If you stop and contemplate, it will become further challenging and help you move forward. Whether you are an experienced hiker or a novice, moving steadily will help you complete the hike easily. You can take a rest but try not to stay in the same place for a long time as that might make the walk more difficult.
Another way to conquer this fear and inability is to indulge in focusing techniques and walking with a clear mind. Take deep breaths and meditate every day for a healthier lifestyle.
Patience is the Key
Fear is healthy and keeps us from performing dangerous tasks. So, the goal is not to eliminate the fear but realise that it exists and gain control over it. You must be comfortable with the fear rather than releasing it. Remember that it is unproductive to get frustrated or upset with yourself. You must focus on yourself and use smart techniques to manage the fear.
Build Your Confidence in a Controlled Environment
If you plan to hike, it is important to build your metabolism prior. Workout, indulge in bouldering, or sports climbing regularly. It will boost your confidence, especially to perform tasks in a controlled environment. If bouldering or rock-climbing activities aren’t available in the fitness centres near you, join a group. This low-risk activity will increase your comfort, especially with height.
In the End
Get comfortable with your fear, gain confidence in yourself, and stay prepared for all the hurdles. The next time you begin hiking, don’t turn back and keep moving forward.
