Outdoorlook.co.uk launches the Winter WIRED Safety Programme
With Winter fast approaching Outdoorlook.co.uk, one of the UK’s leading stockists of discount outdoor clothing, has announced the launch of their Winter WIRED programme – Weather, Information, Route, Equipment and Dress. The programme aims to help walkers stay safe whilst they are out on the fells this season and reminders will be sent to all their customers via email over the next few weeks.
Ian Brookes, Managing Director at Outdoorlook.co.uk said; “Winter is often one of the best times of year to go walking with many walkers enjoying a bright, crisp day. But so many people forget basic safety advice before they start the walk. That’s why we have launched the WIRED programme; a simple five step programme that we hope will help people to stay safe this Winter.”
The WIRED Programme aims to get walkers to think of five simple steps before they go out and includes:
WEATHER
Remember the weather can change. When you are out walking, especially in hilly regions like the Lake District, the weather may look good but things can rapidly change. If you are not aware of the weather forecast beforehand you could be caught out and need assistance.
INFORMATION
Before you set out on your walk remember to tell someone where you are going, what your start and end points will be, and how long you will be out for. The more information you provide the quicker help can be sent if required.
ROUTE
Plan your route carefully and be aware of your capabilities and fitness. If you are not used to walking, build up the distance and challenge slowly. Planning your route can make a walk much more enjoyable and safe.
EQUIPMENT
Having the right equipment before you set out is crucial. Make sure you have a good Ordnance Survey map, a magnetic compass, food and water and a torch for signalling. If you prefer to use electronic navigation aids make sure you take spare batteries.
DRESS
Make sure you are dressed for all situations and remember the weather can change fast. The simple rule is – good walking boots or shoes, waterproofs for whatever the weather and plenty of warm layers. It may start out nice but things can quickly change.
Remember this Winter – Get WIRED, Get Walking.
