My Journey to Walking from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door
The Jurassic Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK. Visitors come from all over the world to see the dramatic coastline and famous landmarks like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. And what better way to experience it by walking the scenic coastal path from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door?
What a journey! It was certainly a challenge, but it was so worth it! The scenery along the way was just gorgeous, and I even saw some wildlife. The hike is incredibly rewarding, with stunning coastline views along the way.
In this post, I'll share my tips for making the trip safely and enjoyably so that you won’t repeat the mistakes I made. So if you're looking for an outdoor adventure, lace up your walking boots, and let's get started!
Getting ready
Although the walk is relatively short, it's always important to come prepared. Be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks, as there was no food or drink stops along the way. In terms of clothing, comfortable walking shoes are a must.
The first step towards the journey
The walk begins at Lulworth Cove, a small, sheltered inlet on the Jurassic Coast. It's worth taking a few minutes to explore the cove before starting the walk properly. Follow the signs for the coastal path, and you'll soon find yourself on your way.
Facing the first hill
After about a mile of relatively flat walking, you'll come to the first big hill of the journey. This section can be tough, but take your time and enjoy the views back over Lulworth Cove as you ascend. Eventually, you'll reach the top of the hill and be rewarded with a beautiful view.
Climbing down the hill
The descent is much easier than the climb and should give your legs a chance to recover before the next challenge. Follow the path as it winds its way down toward Man O'War beach.
Follow the path to Durdle Door
From Man O'War beach, it's just under two miles to Durdle Door. This section is relatively flat and easy-going, so enjoy the scenery and take your time. You'll soon find yourself at Durdle Door, one of England's most iconic natural landmarks.
Walking back to Lulworth Cove from Durdle Door
After enjoying the views from Durdle Door, it's time to begin the journey back to Lulworth Cove. The first part of this section follows a similar route to the outward leg, but eventually, you'll come to a fork in the path. Take the left-hand fork towards Mupe Bay and follow the signs for West Lulworth.
The final hill
Around two miles from Durdle Door, you'll come to the second and final big hill of this walk. Again, it's tough going but take your time and enjoy the views when you reach the top. From here, it's all downhill (literally) to West Lulworth, where this walk ends.
With two big hills and plenty of beautiful scenery along the way, this walk will stay with you long after you finish it. So dust off your walking boots and head out on your own Jurassic Adventure!
