Well the weekend is upon us again and although the weather is not going to be at its best I have found some events that you can enjoy. So if you are not at Glastonbury working your way through the mud to enjoy the music, try one of these alternatives.

Down in deepest Dorset it is the annual ‘Purbeck Plod’. This is a twenty five mile challenge that starts and ends in Swanage. It was first organised way back in 1965 and was done each year until 2002. The local ramblers group reintroduced the walk in 2008 and added the option of a 16 mile walk. The challenge on this event isn’t just the distance, as there are a lot of climbs along the way. On the twenty five mile route these add up to a total of just over 4,000 feet so be careful if you make the attempt.

One event that actually begins next week is the Conwy Walking Week. It runs from the 2nd July until the 9th, and offers both daytime and evening walks, as well as talks and other activities. This year the organizers are focusing on the lesser known Hiraethog areas of moors, reservoirs and agricultural land in the south of the county. However, they do admit that some ‘favourite ‘walks have still made the programme. One early morning walk will even include at its conclusion, breakfast at a local pub, what a great way to start the day. Other walks include exploring the Bronze Age uplands of Penmaenmawr and the glow worms of the Great Orme, so there is something for everyone, so get involved.

Up in Glasgow this weekend is a great opportunity to get the younger kids outside as they are running an Elf, Pixie and Fairy Festival at the North Kelvin Meadow. Allison Galbraith will lead children and parents on a magical storytelling promenade around the Meadow featuring her favorite tales of Elves, Pixies and Fairies. So step out in your own magical costume and learn how to make a willow wand and a head-dress too. There is even an opportunity to dress a willow tree and change it into a Wishing Tree. Food is available in the pop up café, and no doubt fairy cakes will be on the menu .The event starts at 11am so remember to pack your fairy dust and a brolly.

There is nothing better at the end of a good walk than enjoying a good pint, so with the weather not looking too great this weekend, why not get some practice in on the drinking and getting to the Greater Manchester Cider and Perry Festival. Run by Camra at the Palace Hotel there will be over 50 traditional ciders and perries to partake, plus soft drinks and food. And at just £3 for admission, I think I know where my Saturday afternoon will be spent.

So lets hope you find an event or walk that will be as entertaining this weekend, and if you have something coming up and you want to let people know please let us know and we can put it in a future blog. So whatever you do this weekend make sure you are wearing the right equipment, whether it’s waterproofs or your best elf costume, enjoy it.
