Who doesn't love camping? It's a perfect way to escape from the chaos of modern life and spend some quality time with your friends or loved ones. For many of us, camping is the perfect time to reconnect with each other and have fun while admiring the beauty of nature. Embracing nature by sleeping in the wilderness is fun unless the mosquitoes start invading your camp causing discomfort to you and your companions. Not only they are annoying but also carry several water-borne diseases such as Malaria. Fortunately, there are ways to keep them at bay while camping. Listed below are some of the most effective ones.
#1 Choose a dry place to camp
You can avoid mosquitoes easily by ensuring you don't camp next to their habitats. Mosquitoes love stagnant or standing water sources so places to avoid are ponds, marshes, swamps, lakes etc. The best place to camp should be drier and higher site, where there is an open flow of air. Mosquitoes don't go to such places that obstruct their capability of flying. Thus, a breezy clear area is the perfect site where you should set up your camp.
#2 Use homemade essential oil mosquito repellent
There are numerous essential oils available in the market having bug-repelling properties that can be used as a substitute to the heavy chemical-based bug sprays.
When making a natural bug spray using essential oil, you can use 5-10 drops of any of the following:
- Lavender
- Eucalyptus
- Citronella
- Lemongrass
- Thyme
- Cedarwood
- Mint
- Cajeput
- Basil
- Clove
#3 Citronella candles
Though campfires are a popular way to ward off mosquitoes it lasts for only a couple of hours. For the rest of your stay it's wise to use citronella candles to ward off mosquitoes and other pesky bugs. Citronella is an extract of lemongrass and has a pungent smell which is used in many well known bug repellents. You can purchase these in most supermarket stores around the summer months.
#4 Wear citronella and lavender infused bracelets
Wearing mosquito repellent bracelets will constantly emit bug repelling chemicals into the air to create a personal shield against mosquitoes.
#5 Don't wear perfumes having a strong fragrance
Using unscented products will give mosquitoes a tough time finding you. It is also suggested to avoid exercising or drinking alcohol during peak mosquito times (dusk and dawn). Exercising or drinking alcohol increases not only your body temperature and metabolic rate but also makes you a mosquito magnet.
After reading this post, we hope you are now knowledgeable in ways to ward off mosquitoes while camping. Next time, when you go camping with your friends or family, don’t forget to try these methods.
