Hiking during winters is an exciting outdoor activity but not everyone is up for this game. There are a lot of challenges you would like to face in the backcountry due to the falling temperature. The chill seems to creep in quickly and effect the most navigable parts of your body like the toes and fingers. Your toes and fingers are probably the most useful body parts and when you are outdoors, they keep you going.
At the same time, your fingers and toes get effected by the winter more so keeping them toasty is all you need to enjoy the cold outdoors. Your winter camping experience will change for the better, once you have started to take care of your toes and fingers.
Get to the Root of the Cause
The numbness you feel in your fingers and toes is due to the lack of blood flow to those parts of your body. The stressed nerves make it further impossible for the blood to flow into the right places. As blood circulation varies from person to person so there is no set temperature to which this can happen. There are certain things though, that aggravate this condition like lack of insulation, clothing choices like restrictive clothing, and wetness.
Thus, if you are planning to visit the backcountry this winter, these following tips are sure to come in handy so that you keep the numbness away and enjoy the most of your camping time.
- Change Socks and Glove Liners Frequently
Another reason that keeps you from being warm is your wet and sweaty gloves and socks. When you are camping during winters, changing these gears frequently helps you keep warm and keeping frostbite at bay. Pack a few pairs so that you can change them frequently.
- Loosen the Boots
If you do not know this yet, tight footwear is another reason that can cut off blood circulation and cause numbness of the fingers and toes. Thus, the best option here is to go for a relaxed fitted boot and not a tight one so, there is enough foot movement. But, tie up the laces really well to avoid tripping and falling.
- Do Not Forget the Head Cover
Keeping your body warm is the key to avoid the numbness and restriction of blood flow to the extremities. Start by covering up your head. Wear a hat that covers your skull alongside your ears. This will bring warmth in your body and you can avoid the weather extremities.
- Keep Toe and Hand Warmers Handy
Toe warmers are a saviour of cold feet especially the ones with sticky bottoms. The stickiness will let the warmers stay in place. Ideally, you can stick them on top of your toes and hand for maximum effect.
To make the most of your camping trip, it is important to keep yourself warm, especially in those areas that are more prone to numbness. Thus, keeping these tips handy will help you all along the camping trip.
