Guide to buying a waterproof jacket
As traditional as chocolate eggs at Easter are showers in April. While the weather is (usually) warmer in Spring and early Summer, there is a much greater chance of a downpour or two, or three.
The perfect waterproof jacket for summer
Highlights: Summer waterproof jackets, whether for adults or children, can be of a lighter weight material. In the milder seasons a jacket doesn’t need to be as warm or windproof. Yet it’s still important to look for guaranteed waterproofing, breathability and windproofing.
Pack it away: Many lighter weight waterproof jackets can be packed away into a pocket or a pocket-sized pack so that they can be stowed in a daypack and pulled out – or put away – according to the showers.
Hood mood: You might need a hood, but then again you might not. Many summer jackets have the advantage of hoods that can be rolled and zipped away. Look for hoods that have elastic cords for tightening or loosening, according to the conditions. A hood that has a small peak will be useful in very wet and windy conditions.
Pockets are handy: You’ll want a jacket that boasts at least two pockets for popping your hands into when required. If you plan to wear a rucksack with a waistband be sure to check that the pockets and zips are accessible while you have the pack on your back. Pockets that are slightly higher up the jacket are most useful. A pocket for a map is a good idea if you like to do a lot of hill walking. Other useful pockets include a sleeve pocket for stowing your mobile phone etc.
Length matters: A waterproof walking jacket should be long enough to cover your bum and have sleeves that extend over the wrists. If you plan to run in your jacket go for a shorter length. Likewise, if you plan to use the jacket for cycling it should be shorter but also boast a slightly lower back so as to cover your bum while on your bike. Longer sleeves are important for cycling jackets, too.
Zip it up – and down: A two-way zip is a great design advantage. Being able to open your jacket from the top and also the bottom will be a great deal more useful than you could ever know! Zips in the jacket pits are also a bonus for warmer, wetter days. Unzipping pit zips allows more air to circulate in those particularly sweaty places!
Girls v boys: Most women will prefer a female fit jacket, while men will prefer a jacket for guys. This isn’t always the case and everyone has their preference but female and male jackets are designed in a range of sizes to suit our differing shapes.
