Working out outdoor can be a great stress-buster. When you are one with the nature, you do not get tired easily as in an indoor gym workout. The key to a great outdoor workout is to be ready for all weather conditions and plan a run according to your mood. Exercising outdoor has been so much fun for me these days that I have curtailed my regimes in gym and now concentrating on workout outside, in the open.
The outdoor environment is not always congenial for workout and I have experienced many challenges in the pursuit of my hobby. With time, I have learned to adapt to nature and allowed myself to explore its various fascinating facets. I would like to share my experiences and provide you with a few pointers that can make your outdoor sojourn worth its while.
1. Find Solutions, Not Problems Embrace The Climate
No matter what the conditions are outside, always look for the positives and ward off the negativity. If it’s raining outside, wear a waterproof coat and waterproof shoes, and take your lover along for a romantic adventure. And if it’s snowing, wear a warm jacket and tag along with your friends for skiing retreat.
It’s always better to conceptualise a run based on the elements with an optimistic outlook. Planning should be done in a way to reap rewards out of what is in front of you, rather than cringe about what could have been.
2. Warm Up
One of the most forgotten aspects of an outdoor workout has to be warm up. Most people, especially newbies who do not venture out often in cold weather, often forget or do not know about the importance of warm up. From the time I began going for outdoor runs, I have realized that my chances of getting injured has drastically reduced since I have started doing proper warm up.
Inculcate warm up in your pre-workout regime just like me and experience its positive effect on your outside adventures. Start with some light aerobic activity and then move to stretching. Do some toe touches, hip circles, and arm circles for loosening up your joints. All these movements will prepare you for a fun run outside.
3. Check, Plan and Execute
Ascertain the effect of weather on the surroundings that you will tread through on your runs. If you have a path which has soft soil, expect it to become mushy when it rains. And if it’s snowing, then anticipate a slippery road and ward off its effects by wearing shoes specially made for snow.
It is always better to plan and take the best path on your outdoor adventures, so that you are able to enjoy every moment outside. Executing a perfect run, when elements are against you will definitely boost your confidence and help you face life with a tenacious attitude.
4. Dress Right
Dressing right is essential for accomplishing best results from your workout. Make sure that you wear a beanie or a wooly hat, gloves and a warm jacket if it’s snowing outside. Keep your waterproof jacket handy if you see the sky getting murky with clouds crowding the sky. Best advice is to take a lightweight waterproof which does not weigh too much, this way you can run with the jacket and it won’t slow you down or impact your performance. If it gets sultry with sun soaring over your head, wear sun glasses and apply sunscreen protectors on your bare skin to avoid its ill-effects.
With the right attire you will be able to counter the elements and enjoy your run. Do not compromise on dressing, and invest wisely on the gear that you will take, on your outdoor workout.
