Experience A Superlight and Comfortable Backpacking Trip
I have been backpacking for over a decade now and what I have learnt from my experience that you should carry minimum weight on your shoulders. It not only provides comfort but makes the trip more fun. All you need to do is take what is actually required and leave everything else back at home. This kind of approach keeps you feeling relaxed for the entire trip.
Just like any other backpacker, I also used to carry a lot of gear for my long hiking trips just to be sure. What I did not think about is how difficult is it to carry that bag on your shoulders. Instead of thinking about what I actually needed, all I thought of was what I could fit in the backpack. With time I started to think what to pack and how to reduce the backpacking burden, I realised that what really matters is how much I can experience from my hiking trip.
Prepare the List – The first step towards lightweight backpacking is creating an easy list of things I’d need. The appropriate limit is less than 15 pounds (excluding food and water). But don’t bound yourself in the name of light packing as it may lead to discomfort and problems in extreme situations. Always carry what is necessary and that might be able to help you under certain circumstances. Don’t take many clothes as they take up too much room, take a few pair of socks and extra water bottles instead. These things are lightweight and do not take up much space.
Why Pack Light? – When I started my backpacking trips, I used to carry whatever will make me feel comfortable and safe for the entire trip. Eventually I realised that I did not need it all and that most of it was just contributing to the burden on my shoulders.
Here are a few reasons why you should pack light –
- Reduces knee and back pain.
- You can cover more distance.
- You will prevent problems such as sprains, shoulder pain, sore muscles, and blisters.
Think About the Future – Instead of thinking about the immediate time only, there is a need to see what the future might bring for you. Check the weather forecast and pack accordingly. Pack your bags depending on the place you choose for hiking so that you can only take appropriate clothing.
Reduce the weight of your backpack and pack smartly. This strategy would help you complete long trail hikes and keep your body free from pain and unnecessary injuries.
