Beginners Backpacking
Author
If you are getting ready for backcountry camping, it is important to see what the outdoor experience entails. It is also important to check the size of your backpack according to the essentials which you think are required. You must choose your essentials with care.
While getting ready, take care of the following steps:
- Essential clothing and gear
If you can borrow it from someone, it is a great way to save money for the first trip that you are going to embark upon.
- Pack your snacks
Plan your food and pack whichever food or snack is the most important to trail fuel. You can pack plenty of snacks but if they are unhealthy, they will not serve any good.
- Choose your destination wisely
Your destination is the first thing to choose. If you are going on your hike for the first time, choose the destination wisely. You can choose an area which is near to your home.
- Easy Destination
A simple and easy destination can hold a lot for you when it comes to adventure. Pick a place that is close to home. If you want to spend more time on hikes than driving you can start early.
If you haven’t prepared physically, you can also plan a typical hike day with less elevation gain. A well-travelled trail will already have an established camp that gives you a hand if you run into difficulties.
Always make sure to check with google maps or somewhere else whether there is any water body nearby. Your water source should be a lake or large body of river for fresh water. You can also double-check with the local people and managers before relying on a small water source.
Although extreme heat is not fun to explore the wilderness, the mid-summer and daylight is said to maximise your adventure towards the positive. It is always better to check with the forecast and to not hesitate to turn back when the weather deteriorates.
- Clothes to Bring During Backpacking
You don’t need to buy a lot of hiking clothes for the first backpacking trip. You can easily wear the fitness or athletic wear during your adventure. A moisture-wicking fabric will pull all the sweat away easily. It is also important to avoid fabric such as cotton which will absorb all the water and take a longer time to dry when wet. You can get chilly soon, and during the worst-case scenario, lead to hypothermia.
Layer your pants so that they can easily roll on. T-shirts, sun shirt, etc. are some of the ways through which you can keep yourself clean and dry. Keep an extra layer of rainwear with you. Bring rain pants depending upon the weather forecast and check for mosquito –repellents in case of unexpected rain.
If you have a favourite pair of non-cotton-based athletic tights, you can use them as the base layer. Wear track pants above and keep yourself protected.
- Shoes to Pack Along
While footwear is very important to bring along on a successful adventurous trip, it is also important to check whether the shoes are low-top or high-top. You can wear ankle-length boots and /or prefer a lightweight pair of running shoes that are usually used for hiking or trail running.
Break in before you go for the ride. You can wear woollen or synthetic socks and consider bringing a light pair of shoes to change along with you. Wear a pair of sandals alongside the camp when you wander around or take a rest.
