Apparently many women are put off cycling because they just don’t feel safe on the UK roads.

This is in total contrast to the recent world championship success where women’s cycling is at the sports highest ever level.  They simply shy away from daily cycling due to the risks.  Its not for the want of trying as the British cycling organisation says it wants a million women riding bikes by 2020.

Recent world champion Becky James agrees ‘men are more gung-ho and take chances, women like to feel safe when they are out on their bikes and not risk their lives”

James became the first Briton to win four medals last month at a single track cycling championship last month,  she has been tipped to be star at the 2016 Olympics  having missed out on the London games.

James is a recent campaigner  for making UK roads safer and encourage more women to take up the sport and get on their bikes,  we say good on you Becky.

What are the main barriers stopping women getting on their bike?

One of the main barrier stopping women getting on their bikes,  up to 30% of women have used this point according to British cycling  is people getting hit by cars,  you only have to travel around London to see this, or any City / town.  Let’s get more bike lanes on the roads and educate all cyclist that wearing high visibility cycling clothing is the way forward.

We all want to see more people involved in cycling  British Cycling are looking to engage 80,000 more women to get on their bikes through their breeze programme.  Well done British cycling  safe riding.
