There’s an adrenaline rush associated with difficult walks. If you are an adventure lover and hiking is something that you enjoy, you will know the satisfaction of completing a good waking challenge. They provide a way of stepping out of your comfort zone and strengthening your mind and body. The kind of achievement you feel is unparalleled. If you are touring the UK or are a resident here, some fun walking ideas await you.
In this blog, we will take you through the 10 most interesting walking adventures. You can pick any of them for your next hiking journey.
Best Walking Trails in the UK
1. Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge
This is a 25-mile loop taken through the Yorkshire Dales terrain. During this challenge, you reach the highest peaks within 12 hours. They are Whernside (736 m), Ingleborough 723 m), and Pen-y-Ghent (694 m). The beginning and ending point of this challenge is the same and the entire trail is completed on foot.
2. National Three Peaks Challenge
This challenge gives you the opportunity to reach the highest mountains of Whales, Scotland, and England. The entire walk might take up to 24 hours to end. Reaching every mountain is a challenge but when you think about the other tests, it will turn out to be harder. Add time restrictions, logistic issues, and sleep deprivation and you will understand.
3. Welsh 3000s
This is one of the toughest challenges in the UK that you can come across. Welsh 3000s is a preferred choice for athletes and hikers who are always up for new hardships. The walk involves covering 15 mountains, situated on a 3,000 ft. elevation. This is majorly covered within 24 hours and does not include any vehicle travel.
4. Pendle Way
Let us add another walking challenge to the list which is more of a hidden gem. Pendle Hill is in Lancashire and is one of the intriguing hikes. As you kickstart this adventure, you will be guided by the moorlands of Pendle in South Pennines. The beautiful setting all around and the peaceful ambience make it one of the favourites of adventurers. Its starting and ending points are the same, i.e., Pendle Hill in Barley. The trail is at an elevation of 6100 ft and is a 45-mile journey. In case this sounds a little out of your reach, you can switch to a 30-mile journey at a 4500 ft elevation.
5. Bob Graham Round
This hiking trail is named after Bob Graham, a hotelier in Britain. In 1932, Bob set out on a challenging walk of 42 peaks and covered it within 24 hours. This distance of 66 miles, which was not known to him, has today become a pleasurable experience for adventurers. Walkers and runners who are constantly looking for new adventures come here to test their endurance. In case you want to mellow the challenge, you can always complete the hike in 3 to 5 days.
Prepare for a Walking Challenge
Are you ready to cover the trails and make history? Every walk involves preparation for a smooth journey.
- If you are a beginner, start with short trails and gain experience. This will help build intensity and endurance over time.
- Remember to invest in a good pair of hiking/walking shoes. They will help maintain grip and stay safe in challenging weather conditions.
- Pack but don’t go overboard. Keep necessary items required during the hike. Make sure you have water, energy bars, charging supplies, and medicines. But leave behind the things that are not required for the hike.
- Keep yourself hydrated and avoid overeating. Since this is a physical activity, an extensively full stomach can make the trail difficult to complete.
